How Pranayam Works

How does breathwork, or pranayam, actually work?

We have 7 different bodies that are identified in yoga teachings.

The physical body we all know.

The energetic body is that which animates the physical body, like the electricity that animates a toaster.

The other five include the mental, emotional and spiritual dimensions of our being.

For the sake of brevity, let’s group these five together and call it the source body.

Our energetic body manifests mainly in our breath and is the medium between our physics and source body.

For example, when you are anxious (a mental / emotional state) your breath gets shallow (a physical manifestation)

Pranayama is the science of consciously controlling our energetic body thus altering the breathing patterns to create a desired effect in our physical and source bodies.

Pranayama is an important healing modality in yoga and Ayurveda. It is a small subtle string we can take hold of to effect change on a massive scale.
